BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty mortified after asking friend over to ‘Netflix and chill’ – without knowing what it means

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty was left red-faced after asking her friend over to “Netflix and chill” – without knowing the phrase was a euphemism for something else.

Naga spoke to her listeners on BBC Radio 5 live on Thursday morning about sayings that were either forgotten or that had fallen out of common use.

During the discussion, she spoke to an expert about the origin of certain idioms and came to a startling realisation.

One of Naga’s callers was lexicographer and language podcaster Terry Victor, who brought up the phrase “Netflix and Chill”.

The phrase originated as an internet slang term and is used as a euphemism for sexual activity – typically casual sex.

However, this common phrase was lost on Naga, who appeared to have been taking it literally all this time.

Speaking about internet lingo, Victor said: “It’s like ‘Netflix and Chill’ popped up. That’s a phrase that people now understand.”

Naga asked Victor to repeat the phrase, which he then did quite clearly.

She asked: “Doesn’t it mean to relax?”

Victor replied euphemistically: “Yeah, well the relaxing is very intimate. You come round to somebody’s house for a Netflix and Chill.”

At this, Naga appeared flabbergasted, exclaiming: “Oh! Oh my goodness. So It’s like a date? Or a booty call?”

“Yes, it’s like a booty call, revealed Victor, adding: “I think that’s the way you’d put it. A booty call.”
