BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty swipes at ‘annoying’ co-star Charlie Stayt as show’s crew left ‘shaking their heads’

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty took a swipe at ‘annoying’ co-star Charlie Stayt today – as the show’s crew were left ‘shaking their heads’.

The presenters were discussing autonomous sensory meridian response – or ASMR – with Charlie reading out a newspaper article about it.

Charlie was talking about an ASMR exhibition on today’s show

ASMR aims to relax people via auditory and visual ‘triggers’ such as whispering into a microphone, gently tapping something or crinkling paper.

Charlie announced: “So, this is an exhibition at the Design Museum and it’s the first exhibition on autonomous sensory meridian response – ASMR.”

Naga replied: “Well that sounds thrilling.”

Charlie continued: “So the idea is, maybe you can see in this tiny picture here, there’s foam and stuff so you go in there, and various sounds are made and the idea is it helps you to sleep. It helps you to sleep.”

He then asked Naga: “Would you like some examples of the sounds that are supposed to make you feel more relaxed?”

She replied she would “love that” and so he obliged and started tapping his fingers on the table.

Naga replied: “Oh, that is quite therapeutic”, however she wasn’t as impressed with the next noise, which was the sound of crumpling a newspaper.

She said “That’s just annoying,” but when Charlie tried to interject saying “The rustle of newspapers,” Naga cut him off and snapped: “No, that’s annoying.”

“It’s sensory, you see. Everyone in the studio is pretty much nodding off,” Charlie said, gesturing around at the BBC Breakfast camera crew.

Naga replied: “No, they’re actually shaking their heads at you. They’re not nodding off, nodding is like…”

As she mimicked someone falling asleep she added: “They’re just… they’re looking a little bit baffled.”
