BBC confirms string of legendary sitcoms will be revived on iPlayer – from Blackadder to The Young Ones

THE BBC has confirmed a string of legendary sitcoms will be revived on iPlayer as the broadcaster celebrates its centenary year.

Favourite series including Blackadder, The Young Ones and New Tricks will join the BBC streaming service’s offering of shows available to watch in celebration of the milestone anniversary.

Blackadder is among one of the fan favourite shows making a return

The Young Ones will also be making a BBC comeback

There will be 1,000 box sets available to stream for our viewing pleasure during the centenary year, including documentaries, sitcoms and dramas, both old and new.

The newly added content will also include documentary collections from David Attenborough, Michael Palin and Louis Theroux, as well as golden-age films including Citizen Kane, King Kong, Top Hat and Bringing Up Baby.

Among the beloved titles making a grand comeback is comedy show, 2point4 Children, which had viewers tuning in during the initial broadcast in the 1980s and 90s.

Olivia Colman and Tom Hollander’s drama Rev will also be added to the list alongside Lesley Manville’s hit sitcom, Mum.

NOT ON!

Dragons' Den fans call out Steven Bartlett for ‘unfair tactic’ on BBC One show

Dan McGolpin, Director of BBC iPlayer and Channels, said: “There’s no better time than during the BBC’s centenary year to discover a classic BBC series that you’ve never seen before or to watch one of your favourites again.

“From comedy series that re-wrote the rules, such as The Young Ones or The Royle Family, through to ground-breaking comic drama for 2022 like This Is Going to Hurt, there’s something for everyone on BBC iPlayer.”

And if comedy classics don’t really tickle your fancy, Bafta-winning drama Clocking Off will also return to the service.

After six years, 2022 also marked the return of BBC Three after it was taken off air in 2016.

The corporation removed the channel from the airwaves and instead moved it online, believing that the initiative would make it easier to attract younger audiences.

However, following huge successes with shows such as Killing Eve and Normal People over lockdown, the BBC wants to showcase its content to a “wider audience” using “both a broadcast channel and BBC iPlayer in tandem.”

Drag Race UK vs The World, Zara McDermott’s Love In The Flesh and streetwear show The Drop were some of the many shows that launched on the channel.
