GENERATION Z will fondly remember getting up early before school to catch their favourite cartoons – including PBS classic Arthur.
Teaching kids how to navigate childhood challenges from homework to bullies, teachers and siblings, Arthur Read was no doubt a 90s favourite.
The brainy aardvark and his friends, including Buster, Francine, Binky, Muffy and Brain have been long-standing PBS characters.
But after 25 seasons and 26 years of the iconic children’s TV show, it has sadly been announced that it will soon come to an end.
Becoming the longest-running animated series in American history, Arthur has run over 249 episodes since it made its debut in 1994.
Kathy Waugh, who developed the show from books of the same name by Marc Brown, broke the news on the Finding DW podcast.
She told Jason Szwimer of the tragic news: “Arthur is no longer in production. We had our wrap party two days ago.”
Lamenting the decision made by PBS, Kathy added: “I think they made a mistake, and I think Arthur should back and I’m not alone in thinking they made a mistake.
“I don’t know if it was a ratings issue or if it felt like it needed to be retired. To me, it felt evergreen, like it was never going to end but it did end, we finished the last episode, season 25, two years ago.”
Executive producer Carol Greenwald told IGN that the last episode will likely air next year and mark the official end of the series.
While 25th and final season of Arthur will begin to show on TV in the winter of 2022 – it will continue to be available online on PBS Kids.
Carol added: “They are continuing to work together on additional Arthur content, sharing the lessons of Arthur and his friends in new ways.”
After announcing the news, fans were quick to flood Twitter with their disappointment at the news, saying they were “devastated”.
“It’s LITERALLY cancelled and the AUDACITY that PBS has of not continuing Arthur forever is truly astounding,” one wrote of the cancellation.
Another chimed in: “Arthur has been cancelled after 25 seasons and I am DEVASTATED. A moment of silence for the best theme tune of all time.”
“I got so much from Arthur, way too much for it to be cancelled,” a third said, while a fourth agreed: “One of the best shows of my childhood. Damn.”
Others shared broken-hearted emojis as they begged for the show to be “taken to Netflix” so that it didn’t have to come to an end.
“Arthur has been cancelled and I am not OK,” a fifth concluded of the news.
Arthur’s final season will air on PBS in 2022.
