Ben Shephard reacted to the Will Smith slap this morning

He had contrasting opinions to Dr Hilary Jones

He went on to win Best Actor for his role in King Richard, playing tennis players Serena and Venus Williams.

In a debate about the shocking incident, Ben appeared to take umbrage as guests scoffed at the slap.

Ben said: “I watch it and it still triggers me in some way, just in terms of trying to find out what was happening.

“There were young actors like Jude Hill from Belfast there – an 11-year-old and other children who were in the audience.”

A newspaper cartoonist hit back: “What do you mean you found it triggering? I find this whole story wildly uninteresting.”

Then Dr Hilary Jones also waded into the argument. He said: “I agree, i think these highly privileged people.. a slap in the face, so what?

“There are people in the NHS who are getting stabbed and beaten up and there’s nothing happening about it.”

“You’re absolutely right and it’s disgraceful that there’s that sort of behaviour, it’s much more series.”

Disagreeing, Ben replied: “But suddenly at the Oscars, an actor walks up to someone and hits them publicly because of something they said that means people will then feel like going up and stabbing a paramedic. That’s the issue.”

Susanna Reid insisted: “It normalises casual violence.”

In one of the most infamous moments in Oscars history on Sunday night, Will hit Chris Rock after the standup comic, 57, referenced Jada’s shaved head, saying: “Jada, I love you, G. I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it.”

Matrix actress Jada, who first revealed she suffered from hair loss condition alopecia in 2018, rolled her eyes at the joke and looked upset – which appeared to prompt Will into action.

Stars including Nicole Kidman and Lupita Nyong’o looked horrified as he stormed the stage and hit the presenter hard across the face.

The Fresh Prince star then walked back to his seat as a stunned Chris said: “Will Smith just smacked the s**t out of me.”

Will yelled at the comedian: “Leave my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth.”

Chris looked visibly shaken and said: “Wow, dude, it was a G.I. Jane joke,” to which Will repeated, “Keep my wife’s name out your f**king mouth!”

It is believed that Chris has not spoken to Will since the incident.
