BLACK Narcissus viewers were left horrified tonight after Sister Ruth plummeted to her death after fighting with Sister Clodagh.
The final episode of the three-part mini-series aired tonight, and saw the underlying tensions between the two nuns reach boiling point.
Sister Clodagh (Gemma Arterton) had tried to get her priest to take Sister Ruth home, claiming the new convent in the Himalayas that they had set up was making her unwell.
Sister Ruth (Aisling Franciosi) was certainly unraveling, a fact not aided by the fact that she had developed feelings for Mr. Dean, who had also caused desirable thoughts in Sister Clodagh.
Sister Ruth eventually ditched her habit and donned a beautiful local gown left over from a concubine who had fallen to her death from the bell tower after being consumed by love.
She headed to Mr Dean’s home to try and seduce him but he rebuffed her advances, causing her to head back to the bell tower and attack Sister Clodagh who was keeping watch.
The two women tumbled over the edge of the bell tower but were saved by the bell’s rope, with Sister Clodagh pulling Sister Ruth to safety.
But the younger nun wasn’t finished and grabbed Sister Clodagh by the throat, before she managed to push her off and to the floor.
Sister Ruth then got to her feet and stepped backwards, giving Sister Clodagh one final look before leaning back and plummeting to her death.
Viewers – many of whom had been waiting for some action to happen in the series – were taken aback by the sudden turn of events.
Taking to Twitter, one wrote: “BlackNarcissus was really enjoyable. So eerie, atmospheric and visually beautiful.”
Another added: “Absolutely loved #Blacknarcissus beautifully nuanced”.
A third tweeted: “I thoroughly enjoyed the series. Visually stunning, tense, atmospheric and sensual.”
Black Narcissus is available on BBC iPlayer.
