Stephen Reid has been getting closer to Elaine Metcalfe (played by Paula Wilcox) but her son Tim (Joe Duttine) begins to sense that her feelings are not reciprocated.
The failing businessman portrayed by Todd Boyce is trying his best to keep his financial worries and villainous behaviour under wraps.
But he may be forced to kill again and, this time, somebody very close to home could become a target.
While Tim grows suspicious of Stephen, the latter calls at No.8 with the gift Elaine gave him.
David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) immediately assumes the gift is for his birthday – but he’s underwhelmed to discover a hip flask.
When he shows it to his mother Gail Platt (Helen Worth), he brands it a very stingy present from somebody who is supposedly wealthy.
Gail later spots Elaine buying a bottle of whisky for Stephen’s hip flask and voices her suspicions to Nick Tilsley (Ben Price).
Elaine hands over the whisky to Stephen and Gail drops a bombshell – she’s spoken to his estranged wife Gabrielle and he has some serious explaining to do.
David has a lot more on his plate than uncovering Stephen’s secrets as his son Max Turner (Paddy Bever) grows closer to Griff Reynolds (Michael Condron).
The former troublemaker sees the extremist being pally with Max at the Christmas market.
He loses his temper, trying to drag the lad away which prompts Max to tell him he hates him.
The teen drops some shocking news – Max announces that he’ll be moving in with Griff.
Elsewhere in the cobbles, Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) is pleased to see his relationship with Laurence evolve.
The latter suggests to Sean they have a trip away but when Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) sees Laurence surreptitiously send a text, he gets suspicious.
Sean announces that he and Dylan are off to the Peaks with Laurence… and Todd struggles to mask his jealousy.
Is all really as it seems with Laurence?
