Brain-splattering moment The Undoing was forced to axe from finale as fans slam murder scene for ‘glorifying violence’

THE Undoing was forced to axe a brain-splattering moment from the finale – but fans have already slammed the murder scene for “glorifying violence”.

As the Sky Atlantic and HBO show came to its stunning conclusion this weekend, fans witnessed Jonathan’s brutal of Elena.

The original murder scene was much more gruesome

The scenes showed Hugh Grant‘s character violently smashing Elena’s (Matilda De Angelis) head against a wall, intercut with scenes of Jonathan talking to his son Henry (Noah Jupe) in the car.

Then Jonathan picks up a hammer and beats Elena’s face until she becomes unrecognisable.

However, Hugh Grant revealed this scene would have been much more gruesome – with Jonathan picking parts of her brain out of his mouth.

Speaking to TVLine, he said: “I don’t know what’s in the final cut, but I was doing some takes where Jonathan – while hammering away at [her head] – was spitting out a part of her brain.

Jonathan killed his lover Elena

His character was married to Nicole Kidman

“I don’t know if that’s still in there.”

The scene didn’t end up making the final cut, but Hugh teased an even worse take.

He said: “This is much worse, but after her head was [beaten into] pulp I [did a take] where Jonathan the doctor was quite interested in her brains, and he started poking around in them with his finger.”

Hugh has previously revealed he encouraged the director to make the murder scene more violent.

However, the scene that was aired was still too violent for some fans, who criticised it for “glorifying violence”.

One person said: “In other news, anyone else watching #TheUndoing ?
Beautifully shot, gorgeously produced, glamorisation of violence against women. The usual”

Another added: “I am extremely critical of shows that portray graphic violence against women and #TheUndoing did not pass my litmus test

“I feel like that was a really exploitative show and a shallow portrayal of an issue that needs more in depth and critical exploration in a story…”

A third remarked: “A thing that legitimately bothers me about #TheUndoing is the constant fetishization of Elena including fetishizing the violence done to her. Kept waiting for that to be turned on its head or commented on or the show to care about her as a real person beyond just “sexy dead lady””
