Brenda Blethyn has officially announced her departure from the long-running ITV drama series, Vera, after portraying the iconic DI Vera Stanhope for 14 years. As her final episodes are set to air this January, fans will witness Vera's farewell in two movie-length episodes.
No Spin-Off Plans
Despite speculations and fan appetite for a spin-off series, Brenda Blethyn has firmly shut down any potential for a Vera spin-off. Addressing the rumors, the 78-year-old stated that she has not heard of any plans for a prequel and personally believes that they often do not work well. She referenced other series like Endeavour and Jane Tennison, noting that prequels sometimes lack the connection with the original character.
Time for Family
Explaining her decision to leave the show, Brenda shared that she wanted to prioritize spending time with her family after realizing she had not had a summer break with them for 14 years. Despite her love for the role, she felt it was time to move on and bid farewell to Vera Stanhope.
Final Episodes and Special
Viewers can catch Brenda Blethyn's final episodes as Vera on January 1 and 2 at 8pm on ITV1. Additionally, a factual special titled Vera: Farewell Pet will follow on January 3 at 9pm. The episodes will also be available for streaming on ITVX.
