BRIDGERTON’S intimacy director has revealed the secret rules behind filming Daphne losing her virginity.
The Netflix period drama has amassed a huge following thanks, in part, to its steamy sex scenes and saucy moments.
While some of the more racier shots proved tricky to navigate, it was actually the scene where Daphne Bridgerton – played by Phoebe Dynevor – loses her virginity that ended up taking a different direction.
Lizzy Talbot, the show’s intimacy coordinator, has revealed that when designing that particular shot it was a conscious decision to keep the camera on her face.
She explained: “Phoebe was fairly covered, she was under some sheets, and the focus is on her face looking at Simon, and we don’t often see that.
“We’re looking at her face viewing a naked man for the very first time.”
Lizzy went on: “It’s not about the curves of her body and what she looks like nude. We’ve got the back of him in the foreground, and her gaze.”
Speaking about the shots that included love making, Talbot said she is glad she was able to highlight “far more realistic sex scenes” than what movies and TV normally portray.
“They can give people such a false sense of what sexual pleasure should be,” she explained. “And it’s the movies that need to adjust, not reality.”
Actress Phoebe, 25, credits Lizzy with making her feel more comfortable during one particular scene.
Speaking to Glamour, she revealed that the “most difficult” scene was actually the masturbation sequence.
Phoebe told the publication: “That was the hardest scene to shoot. That’s saying something, because there were a lot of difficult scenes to shoot.
“You feel very vulnerable in those scenes. We did the intimate scenes like stunts – we blocked them out, so you have yoga balls in between you and all sorts of things that never make you feel exposed in any way.
“You always feel safe. I’d rehearse with Rege so much that we both knew what we were doing. It felt very practical.
“But on my own, it’s a different thing. The stage directions are very specific: You have to [perform having] an orgasm.
“It’s a difficult thing to rehearse, which means you don’t. You just do it.”
She continued: “I think it would have been a very difficult experience if Lizzy hadn’t been on set protecting me and looking after me. No one wants to be told how to perform an orgasm [on set] by a man.”
