Only Connect, the popular quiz show on BBC Two, has thrown fans for a loop with an "impossible" question that will test your wits like never before. Hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell, the show revolves around teams deciphering connections between seemingly unrelated clues. With questions covering a wide range of topics, from the arcane to popular culture, contestants must determine the type of connection - be it thematic, linguistic, factual, or mathematical - without any hints.
A gripping gameplay with four rounds
In each episode, there are four rounds of increasing difficulty. The first round gives teams 40 seconds to uncover the relationship between four words or phrases. In the second round, the clues transform into sequences, and teams must identify the fourth word or phrase using the hints they've been given so far.
The third round gets truly challenging as teams encounter the "connecting wall": a grid of 16 words or phrases, each consisting of four sets of connecting words. To progress, contestants must untangle the complex web of connections.
The 'impossible' question
In a recent episode (Season 12, Episode 37: Verbivores vs. Cosmopolitans), a particularly mind-boggling question left viewers scratching their heads. The contestant received the clue "five words in alphabetical order" and things only got more difficult from there.
The clues were as follows:
- BGB GBGB GBG
- PTTN GPTT NGPT TNGPT TNGP TTNG
- MSS SMS SSM SS SMS SSM SSS
- LS TL ST LST LS TL ST
The correct answers, much to the relief (or frustration) of viewers, were:
- BAG BEG BIG BOG BUG
- PATTING PETTING PITTING POTTING PUTTING
- MASSES MESSES MISSES MOSSES MUSSES
- LAST LEST LIST LOST LUST
