Keeping it clean
Telly star Carol Vorderman has revealed the secret rule that ensure fans of the popular game show Countdown never see any rude words on their screens. According to Vorderman, any scenes in which contestants spell out inappropriate words are promptly cut and re-recorded.
Alternative words with a similar score
In order to avoid breaking broadcasting rules, the offensive language is replaced with alternative words that carry a similar score. Vorderman shared this insight during an interview on the Off Menu podcast.
Maintaining composure
During the interview, Vorderman also spoke about the challenges of keeping a straight face when confronted with rude words on the game show. She explained that in the early days, scenes featuring inappropriate language would result in immediate retakes, as cast and crew had to maintain a professional demeanor.
Debunking rumors
Vorderman also took the opportunity to address rumors about a particular offensive word being used on Countdown. She denied claims that a word beginning with 'CU' and ending with 'PS' had ever been used on the show, emphasizing that such language would never make it to the final broadcast.
Save it for the bar
While Vorderman admitted that presenters may engage in off-limits language after the show in the bar, she made it clear that the on-air version of Countdown remains clean and family-friendly.
Brush with skin cancer
In addition to discussing the show's strict policy on offensive language, Vorderman also opened up about her personal health battle. She revealed that she had previously dealt with pre-cancerous skin cells, which were discovered after a biopsy.
