Popular wildlife series Autumnwatch was recently cancelled by the BBC after 17 years on air, leaving fans and hosts disappointed. However, presenter Chris Packham has taken matters into his own hands by launching his own nature show online.
8 out of 10 Bats: A DIY operation
Chris Packham's new show, titled 8 out of 10 Bats, will be streamed live on YouTube from the British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield. With a budget of around £50,000, the show will feature young naturalist presenters, filmmakers, conservationists, and campaigners, all under the age of 25.
A passionate and educational show
From October 30 to November 2, Chris Packham and his stepdaughter Megan McCubbin will broadcast four hour-long episodes of 8 out of 10 Bats. The show promises to be passionate, fascinating, and educational, featuring topical films, informative demonstrations, and live wildlife cameras.
Celebrating wildlife and giving young people a voice
Speaking about the show, Chris Packham said, "8 Out Of 10 Bats is about being excited by a love of life, everything which slimes, slithers or stings. But it's also about making sure young people have a voice and an opportunity to showcase their extraordinary abilities."
Bringing joy and escapism to viewers
Megan McCubbin, who will be co-presenting the show with Chris Packham, said, "If you're feeling starved of wildlife TV this autumn, then 8 Out Of 10 Bats will bring some joy and escapism to these darker evenings and celebrate the species on our doorstep and beyond."
Autumnwatch fans' petition and BBC's response
After the cancellation of Autumnwatch, fans rallied together and created a petition to save the show, gathering nearly 100,000 signatures. In response, the BBC gave fans a three-part special on The One Show, featuring the original presenters Chris Packham, Michaela Strachan, and Gillian Burke.
