Colton Underwood came out as gay on Wednesday morning

On Wednesday morning, Colton revealed to the world that he was gay and he further apologized to his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Randolph, and all the women who had competed during his 2019 season.

The 29-year-old NFL star told Robin Roberts: “I ran from myself for a long time and hated myself for a long time and I’m gay.

“I came to terms with that earlier this year and have been processing it
the next step, letting people know… I’m still nervous. It’s been a journey for sure.”

Colton revealed he was suicidal for some time

He further claimed that he was the happiest and healthiest he’s ever been, despite dealing with suicidal ideations for some time.

“I got into a place, for me in my personal life, that was dark and I can list a bunch of different things and they would be excuses,” he said.

“I would have rather died than say I’m gay and that was my wake-up call.”

He continued: “Even just suicidal thoughts…driving my car close to a cliff, if this goes over the cliff, it’s not that big of a deal…I don’t feel that anymore.”

After his shocking interview, many Bachelor Nation fans took to social media to praise him and demand he be given another season so he could actually find love this time around.

Producers gave him his own Bachelor season, where he went home with Cassie. The two later split in a messy break-up.

He also famously dated gymnast, Aly Raisman.

One fan wrote: “.@Colton as the first gay bachelor?”

A second one tweeted: “Yay! Do your thing ABC. We’re waiting for the first season with a gay #Bachelor.”

A third one commented: “First gay Bachelor season.”

However, the comments didn’t stop there as a fourth fan wrote: “Make Colton the Bachelor again!”

A fifth one tweeted: “This should have happened years ago. But I would say now is a perfect time for a gay season of The Bachelor.”

And a sixth one commented: “Get Colton back on The Bachelor for the messy gay version we all deserve!”

Colton talked the reason why he was known as the virgin Bachelor

In his interview, Colton also addressed why he was known as the “virgin Bachelor,” saying: “I could never give anybody a good enough answer about why I was a virgin. The truth is I was ‘the virgin Bachelor’ because I was gay, and I didn’t know how to handle that.”

In the interview, Colton further addressed his relationship with Cassie and said: “I would like to say sorry for how things ended, I messed up I made a lot of bad choices.

“I loved everything about her, and it’s hard for me to articulate my emotions and going through that relationship with her because I obviously had an internal fight going on.

“I’m sorry for any pain and emotional stress I caused, I wish it wouldn’t have happened the way it did. I wish I would have been courageous enough to fix myself before I broke anyone else.”

He also told the other women who competed: “I would understand why they would think that way, I thought a lot of this too.

He did apologize to Cassie and said he was in love with her

He also apologized to the other women competing in his season

“Do I regret being The Bachelor? Or handling it the way I did? I do think I could have handled it better.”

Colton told Robin that he first discovered he was gay when he was just six years old but didn’t fully confirm it until he reached high school.

Growing up in a religious household, he believed being gay was wrong and would try to “pray the gay away.”

However, lockdown and the idea that he would rather be dead made him come to terms with his sexuality.

He also told Robin that he received an outpour of support from friends and family when he came out to them.

Following his interview, producers of The Bachelor put a statement in solidarity.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, executives said of Colton coming out: “We are so inspired by Colton Underwood’s courage to embrace and pursue his authentic self.

“As firm believers in the power of love, we celebrate Colton’s journey in the LGBTQIA+ community every step of the way.”
