In a recent episode, Mason encouraged Dylan to skip school and throw a party at the empty Rovers Return pub. The two were joined by other classmates, who proceeded to drink and blast music. Mason also pressured Dylan into pursuing a romantic encounter with newcomer Leyla, which resulted in a confrontation with Dylan's father.

Viewers took to social media to voice their displeasure with the new teen storylines and the character of Mason. Many believe that the focus on teenage characters is tedious and detracts from the main plot of the show.
One fan tweeted, "Nope. Don't like Mason. Awful actor, very annoying and really difficult to watch. Let's not keep this storyline going for too long. Nobody cares about the teenagers!" Another wrote, "Why o why are they bringing in more teen brats we don't care about???"
