Deadline Looms for Soap Legend
Coronation Street actor Bill Roache, 91, has been given a three-month ultimatum to settle a significant tax debt or risk facing bankruptcy for the second time in his career.
High Court Drama
The veteran actor, known for his role as Ken Barlow on the long-running soap opera, reportedly owes a substantial six-figure sum in taxes. A recent bankruptcy hearing at the High Court revealed that the original debt of £546,348.53 has been reduced, with the full amount still undisclosed.
Financial Troubles
This is not the first time Roache has faced financial challenges. In 1999, he was previously declared bankrupt, with creditors estimating around £600,000 in unpaid debts. Despite owning a mortgage-free property valued at £900,000 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, the actor's financial situation remains precarious.
Longest-Serving TV Star
Roache holds the record for being the longest-serving TV star in a continuous role, having portrayed Ken Barlow since the debut of Coronation Street in 1960. In recognition of his contributions to drama and charity, he was appointed an OBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list in 2021.
Future Uncertainty
The court has adjourned the hearing for 12 weeks to allow for the potential sale of property to settle the outstanding debt. Roache is set to return in June, where the decision on his financial status will be finalized.
