Coronation Street to air its first on-screen kiss since social distancing rules between James Bailey and Danny Tomlinson

CORONATION Street has confirmed it will air its first on-screen kiss between actors since the Coronavirus pandemic started.

The ITV soap has been adhering to social distancing rules over the past year, meaning intimate scenes including kissing and sex scenes, came to an abrupt halt.

Since then, viewers have instead watched the cast use romantic gestures to express their love – as everyone sticks to the two metre distance ruling.

But things will finally be changing on Wednesday’s (June 30) episode, as James Bailey (Nathan Graham) and Danny Tomlinson (Dylan Brady) share a kiss.

The intimate moment happens after James publically comes out as gay during a press conference.

During the conference, James faces questions from journalists about his sexuality after pictures of him and Danny are leaked online.

As he takes the stage at his promotion’s press conference, James announces that he’s gay.

Following his big reveal, Danny tells the athlete that he watched the conference and confesses that he wants to be with him, leading to a passionate embrace.

Watched on by Tim Metcalfe, the pair share a tender kiss as they seal their romance and decide to give things a go.

The actors are able to share their sweet on-screen smooth after becoming part of a tested cohort, meaning they could work closer than two meters and kiss.

Pre-tested cohorts have also made other scenes possible on the soap, including Alya and Yasmeen Nazir and Geoff Metcalfe’s fire stunt for the 60th anniversary.

It was also used earlier this year when Kevin and Debbie Webster fought for their lives after getting locked in a fridge.

Nathan recently opened up about James’ decision to come out publicly, admitting that Danny influences him.

Speaking to Digital Spy, the actor explained: “Danny definitely has a big part in that because he’s come back and they clearly still have feelings for each other.

“So what is most important to James at that point, is it a case of does he hide away and then maybe potentially not have something with Danny?

“But then if he does come out, are they going to get together, are they going to be happy together? So it’s that which is mainly in his mind at that point.”

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7:30pm and 8:30pm on ITV.
