THE manager who took on the tough gig of running one of Los Angeles’ most notorious hotels explains why she stayed in the job for so long.
Amy Price ran the seedy Hotel Cecil for 10 years until 2017 and was present during the highly publicised disappearance of Elisa Lam.
Price features in the new true-crime docuseries Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel on Netflix which focuses on the strange case of 21-year-old Canadian woman
The Cecil Hotel already had a reputation before Elisa’s death, with a number of people being murdered or taking their own life there.
Serial killer Richard Ramirez – himself the subject of fellow Netflix series Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer – had also stayed there during his reign of terror in LA in the 1980s.
The hotel is situated in downtown LA in an area rife with drugs, crime, poverty and homelessness, known as Skid Row.
Thanks to its proximity to Skid Row the hotel was witnesses to high rates of violence, murders, suicides and drug use.
Fans watching the docuseries questioned why Price only left the tough gig after the hotel closed in 2017 and she admitted she never even once considered quitting.
“Never. Not at all. I had such a wonderful team that I worked with, and we were all committed to getting the job done and working together and we did that quite well,” she told Metro.
Price admitted feeling “bittersweet” over the hotel’s closure and lamented its bad reputation, hoping it would be able to shed its “darkness”.
“It did close and I do hope that in the future it will reopen to something that is referenced to something different than what it has become,” she said.
“When people are just so curious, you know, they want to believe there must be more to it.”
Elisa disappeared in January 2013 while staying at the titular hotel and two weeks later, her body was found in a water tank on the top of the hotel.
The docuseries looks at whether it was murder, suicide, an accident or even something supernatural.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel is available on Netflix now.
