On his way to work, Dan was hit by a car at a busy roundabout back in February and later revealed his helmet saved his life.

Camera footage of the terrifying ordeal showed him thrown off and into the path of the car while his bike was crushed.

Now, months later, he explained how he saw the police and paramedics stand over him while he went deaf and body ached.

Dan revealed that he didn’t break any bones, but remembered his face was a “bloody mess.”

And the policeman told him: “Another 50cm and it essentially runs over your head.”

“I have no recollection of the accident at all, so I’m not suffering any sort of flashbacks or anything like that,” Dan said before adding, “I’m thankful that I’m back on the bike.”

Dan presented at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards just days after his accident. He said: “It’s amazing how quickly your face heals.

“I had the crash on a Monday and I think I presented the RTS
Awards the following Wednesday, then I was back on air I think the next Monday.”

Dan made the big decision to leave the BBC to join Channel 5 news back in May 2022 – but was it the right move?

He revealed: “I felt like it was a big decision to go, it was a job that I could have stayed in for the next ten years and six and a half years is a long time.

“But I just felt like I wanted a new challenge, Channel 5 came along with an amazing offer of a chance to do news and bring a whole new different spin on the way news is done and to make it sort of different from other things, and quite sort of stand out.

“If I was sort of 80% sure I’d made the right decision when I left, I’m 100% sure now.”

Dan shared that he doesn’t miss the 3am at BBC Breakfast, but he does miss his former colleagues there.

He confirmed that he is still in contact with them, as he said: “I spoke to Sally yesterday, I texted Carol on Wednesday and I spoke to Louise for ages on the phone last week.

“These people are still my really good friends, because I’m not working with them anymore doesn’t mean that we’re not good pals.”
