DANCING On Ice star Bez once lived for months IN A SHED – after becoming homeless when he was younger.
The Happy Mondays legend – real name Mark Berry – says he was forced to sleep under bushes after being thrown out of his home as a teenager in Greater Manchester.
Bez, 57, says he hit rock bottom aged 16, so turned to a friend called Maggi, who gave him a place to stay.
But when the time came for him to move, he came up with the idea of turning a shed at the bottom of Maggi’s garden into his own “private little pad”.
After agreeing to his idea, the former Celebrity Big Brother housemate transformed it into a liveable space – and even used it to woo girls.
He said: “I set to it right away, whitewashing the interior and putting in a thick-pile carpet, followed by a raised platform bed, a TV, a stereo and a calor gas heater.
“I even had my own facilities for making the brews in the morning. For a lad of sixteen, it was heaven.
“Okay so it was a shed, but it didn’t half come in useful as a conversation piece, plus the girls just loved the novelty value.”
The singer revealed all in his book Freaky Dancing: Me and The Mondays.
He explained how he slept rough for some time and only on occasions spent the night at a friend’s house, describing his life as “hell and in purgatory”.
On one wet night when he was desperate, he broke into his old school just to get his head down somewhere warm and dry.
He added: “I curled up by a radiator, wrapped in the rubber PE mats and slept fitfully till the early morning, making off before the first signs of life hit the streets.
“I found and scoffed a whole box of crisps. It was the first ‘food’ I’d had in days. I was f**king starving.”
Bez is set to make his Dancing On Ice debut tonight.
The star appeared on Celebrity Masterchef last year, and is also a regular on Celebrity Gogglebox.
He will take on the likes of ex Strictly star Brendan Cole, singer Rachel Stevens and Corrie legend Sally Dynevor as he tries to win the DOI crown.
