Their series has aired intermittently since 1987, with their last outing being the 2005 Christmas Special.

However, the pair are set to reunite once again for a new special which will celebrate women in comedy.

French and Saunders: Funny Women will see Dawn, 63, and Jennifer, 62, take a look at “all of the crucial and unforgettable female contributions to the pantheon of comic history across the globe.”

The pair joked about the show, which will air on Gold: “Are women funny…? This is the thorny, age-old question we have been chewing over since both of us were two years old and to date, we still have no definitive answer.

They will reunite for a special programme on Gold celebrating women in comedy

“So in this programme, we explore 50,000 or so irrefutable examples to see if we can draw any blatantly predetermined conclusions…”

Meanwhile the Gold Channel said the special will be “a warm, affectionate and illuminating celebration of women in comedy, presented as only French and Saunders could.”

Helen Nightingale, Senior commissioning editor at Gold added: “I’ve always been a huge fan of French and Saunders, and to be able to bring them back together on Gold to celebrate the funny women who inspire them is a dream come true.”

It isn’t the only project Dawn has in the works with Gold, as she is also making a documentary special about the making of her hit comedy, The Vicar of Dibley.

French & Saunders aired for six seasons had several one-off specials, and their trailblazing comedy saw them receive the BAFTA Fellowship in 2009.

While Dawn branched out on her own with The Vicar of Dibley, Jennifer had her own solo success with hit sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, which ran from 1992 intermittently until 2012, with a film version of the show being released in 2016.

French and Saunders: Funny Women will air on Gold later this year.
