DOCTOR Who favourite David Tennant made a sensational return to the show tonight – after outgoing time lord Jodie Whittaker regenerated “backwards.”
For the first time in the history of the BBC1 sci-fi series, a doctor was seen morphing into a former incarnation.

Next year David, 51, is expected to front a series of special episodes alongside former companion Catherine Tate, 52, to mark the 60th anniversary of the show.
He’s then set to regenerate into the newest doctor, Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, 30, for a full series, probably in 2024.
As part of a spectacular farewell to Jodie, 40, the feature-length episode called The Power of the Doctor featured a further SIX doctors making cameos.
A TV insider said: “The episode whipped fans of Doctor Who into a complete frenzy because they won’t have seen an episode featuring so many time lords in one place.
“Plus, the return of David will be the ultimate treat as he is still considered to be the fans’ favourite timelord after the show enjoyed its successful reboot in 2005.
“It won’t be a complete surprise, however, as David has been seen in public filming new episodes and everyone has assumed Jodie would regenerate into him at the end of this series.”
Talking about the future, new showrunner Russell T Davies said: “If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way!
“The path to Ncuti’s Fifteenth Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun! And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? How, what, why? We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose!”
Fans of the show went wild over the regeneration episode, with their minds blown by the latest twist from the sci-fi show.
“THAT WAS ALL WORTH IT FOR DAVID HOLY S**T #DoctorWho,” wrote one fan.
Another said; “My inner child could CRY that David Tennant is back oh my GOD #DoctorWho”
While a third said: “NO WAY AS IF THEY BROUGHT BACK DAVID TENNANT AS THE DOCTOR HAHA YESSS THANK U BBC #doctorwho”
The line up of former Tardis dwellers who also appeared in The Power Of The Doctor included Peter Davison, 71, who played the Time Lord from 1981 to 1984 and is father-in-law to David since he married his daughter, Georgia, in 2011.
Also appearing was Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy, both 79, who played the doctor from 1984 to 1986 and from 1987 to 1989 respectively.
Two surprising returns were Paul McGann, 62, who was the doctor in a 1996 Doctor Who film and Jo Martin, 42, who played a “fugitive doctor” in recent series of the show.
The first ever time lord also featured, the late William Hartnell.
Showrunner Chris Chibnall, who is also leaving the show alongside Jodie, said the doctors were selected on the basis of who was available and who agreed to take part.
The Celeb Report revealed in January that Jodie wouldn’t regenerate into the next official doctor, and in February we told how the BBC were set to bring former timelords back to the show as they prepared to mark its 60th anniversary.
Doctor Who: The Power of The Doctor is available now on BBC iPlayer.
