DOM Littlewood’s latest investigative series has seen the journalist join a number of institutions across Britain, including the UK Border Force, Mounted Police and more.
During the first episode of the BBC series Maximum Security – which aired on Monday evening – the star made a shocking discovery.
The 57-year-old was spending some time with the UK Border Force, getting to grips with how they operate.
Dom had a first-hand look into how they prevent prohibited items from entering Britain.
Whilst filming was happening, the Border Force team at Dover discovered a huge amount of cocaine being illegally smuggled in.
Recounting the moment they busted the attempted smuggle, Dom called it a “lucky break”, in an interview with Express.co.uk.
During the episode, the star can be seen learning exactly how the staff at the port scan passing vehicles with an x-ray style machine, which typically gives away any clues as to whether or not there’s a need to search it.
Towards the end of the hour-long episode, one huge lorry was flagged, as it looked like it had large blocks of some kind in the booth, above the driver.
Dom explained to the Express: “Now amazingly this port brings in 1000 lorries a day and these men and women down there, they’ve got to try and spot people smuggling illegal things in and there’s also things coming in which sometimes they’re not aware of.
“Now they’ve got a great big warehouse down there with three-foot concrete walls and it’s basically one of the largest X-ray machines you’ve ever seen in your life.
“This x-ray is so powerful it can even see through the engine block and they showed me some historical cases where they spotted guns or packages or animals and people.”
He explained what happened with the cocaine incident: “Coincidentally, the one that came in had suspicious properties.
So we immediately went down and the guy who drove it came from Macedonia.
“He had to get out the lorry while they inspected it and then it turned out he had 10 kilograms of coke under his mattress.”
The team Dom was working with actually found over 30kg of cocaine in the bust, which he explained during the show: “Would have a value of around £2.5m on the street.”
