The actress, who is played by Michelle Collins, had been in a witness protection programme and given a new name – Rose Knight.

Her explosive comeback comes alongside Adam Woodyatt‘s return as Ian Beale.

Cindy and Ian are back together and have been living in France, but will make their way back to Walford this summer.

However, the ex-convict is unaware that her estranged husband George Knight and her two daughters have moved to The Square.

Michelle, 61, has now revealed that EastEnders viewers will be brought fully up to speed on the past two decades of Cindy’s life in flashback scenes.

She said: “She’s had a lot of tragedies in her life as well. I mean, she’s been through this whole witness protection, we’re kind of laughing about it but it really is dramatic, and we’ve got a few kinds of flashbacks, can I say that?

“That kind of playing with time – if you’re gonna play with time – and you know, Lucy’s been murdered – who else is dead?”

The Celeb Report previously revealed how the soap actress was reprising her role on the BBC One soap.

Speaking about working with Michelle again, Adam, 55, said: “No offence but working with Michelle has been like putting on an old pair of slippers. It’s comfortable. It just works.”

Adam, who has been away from EastEnders for two years, added: “The weirdest thing for me that since I’ve been gone they’ve rebuilt the lot. I got out of the car yesterday morning and gone ‘where’s the Square?’ It’s just disappeared.

In her first scenes, Cindy was seen lounging by a pool in France as her mobile phone rang, with estranged husband George Knight’s name appearing on screen.

EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
