Elaine Jones makes a shocking discovery about Stephen Reid in Coronation Street

STEPHEN Reid caught Elaine Jones’ eye as soon as he made his way back to the cobbles last year.

But next week in Coronation Street, she’s crushed when she finally realises her other half could have sinister motives.

Elaine Jones (played by Paula Wilcox) fell head over heels for Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce), firmly convinced she’s found the perfect man for her.

She was over the moon when he seemed ready to settle down with her as he decided they should get married.

Although they kept their engagement a secret, the pair eventually revealed they were to get hitched and they moved into their own Redbank Apartment.

Unfortunately, cracks have recently begun to appear within the relationship as Stephen is adamant on taking over the Underworld factory after Carla Connor decided to put her business up for sale.

Elaine, on the other hand, is reluctant to invest any money in the factory and wants to focus on their retirement.

Things could go from bad to worse between them next week on ITV as Elaine is due to make a shock discovery about the man she shares her life with.

It all begins as Elaine practises her Tai-Chi exercises and Stephen snaps at her before heading off for work.

Once he’s gone, Elaine is worried about his low mood.

In later scenes, Stephen reveals that it’s Canada Day, prompting Elaine to come up with an idea.

Determined to win Owen Longford (Ben Hull) round, Stephen invites him for lunch.

In the flat, Owen levels with Stephen and admits that he doesn’t trust him and suspects he’s using Seagull Ltd to siphon money from Underworld.

To top it all off, Owen is convinced Stephen wants Jenny, his love interest, for himself.

Stephen tries to argue but the door suddenly opens.

Elaine, Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls), Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) and Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell) burst in waving flags, wishing him a happy Canada Day.

Stephen paints on a smile, but he’s taken aback to clock Elaine scowling at him. 

Regular viewers of the Manchester-based drama will know that Stephen became obsessed with Jenny Connor after committing his first murder in Weatherfield.

But he has kept his feelings to himself as he tries to take advantage of Elaine Jones and her comfortable lifestyle.

This didn’t stop him from trying (and failing) to sabotage Owen’s budding romance with Jenny by making up lies to pull them apart.

Unfortunately, when Owen found out he had given him the reputation of ladies’ man, he threatened to fire Stephen from the Underworld business as soon as he took over as his new boss.

Stephen is desperately trying to remain in the factory – but will his efforts be enough?

Could Elaine finally be on to him and rumble all of his dark secrets?
