Viewers know that Dawn shot Malone three times in self defence after he tried to force her to take her own life by overdosing on heroin.
Yet now, an emotional Dawn breaks down as she insists she is a monster for killing him.
Taking her corner, Billy makes an impassioned speech arguing the case for why she did what she did – which included burying Malone’s body in the churchyard.
This led Dawn to lean in for a kiss, which Billy initially reciprocates.
Yet to her dismay he then pulls away, leaving her humilated.
Dawn retreats into her shell and refuses to take Billy’s calls while he heads to Tall Trees cottage with Meena.
Yet realising his mind is still firmly on his ex, he makes the decision to come clean to Dawn and insist she hears what he has to say.
Billy tells her he wants to be with her but wants reassurance she feels the same after their messy past.
ITV boss Kevin Lygo has already teased new winter storylines leading up to Christmas, hinting that Dawn will have to watch her back with Meena still on the prowl.
The murdering nurse is set to kill again in Emmerdale this week – and at least one character has been confirmed to die.
Meanwhile actress Paige Sandhu has hinted the serial killer could die in the soap’s dramatic Survival Week.
Meena recently set her sights on Billy as her latest love interest.
Billy recently appeared as her knight in shining armour, defending Meena against Amy Wyatt, who reported her to police after the love sick psycho trashed Victoria Sudgen’s home.
Since then Meena, who killed Liam’s daughter Leanna by throwing her over a bridge, has been warming to the thought of a romance with Billy – even if only to make David jealous.
The problem is that Billy is Dawn’s ex and it’s clear the former couple still have feelings for one another.
And Meena was clearly not happy when she finally get a pub ‘date’ with Billy – only for Dawn to turn up.
Up until her entrance, Meena and Billy were freely flirting, with Meena mentally plotting their future.
When Dawn interrupted the vibes, viewers were quickly left worrying for the mum’s safety, with the anticipation continuing.
