BERNICE Blackstock has had the best of luck in love in recent years but tides could be turning for her.
However, Emmerdale‘s Samantha Giles pointed out one major obstacle for her character’s love life.
Bernice Blackstock has been unlucky in love
She’s had failed reunions with former fiancé Liam Cavanagh
But romance could be on the way
The beloved B&B owner was perhaps hoping for a reunion with her former fiancé Liam Cavanagh after his marriage with Leyla Harding broke down.
Unfortunately, while the pair locked lips on multiple occasions, all hopes of a reconciliation have gone.
Speaking to The Celeb Report and other press, Samantha Giles explained that Bernice and Liam’s relationship could be well and truly over, despite their fleeting reunions.
“I think that was, you know, when you’ve been somewhere and the familiarity, and that kind of moment, and you think, ‘could we go back there?'”
“That’s what that was with them. And so I don’t think that they
could go back really.”
“She’s been single for quite a while and I think, maybe, her needs have changed a little bit”, she added.
“She’s always gone for younger men, hasn’t she? And men that are sort of conventionally good-looking or dynamic.”
Recent scenes have shown Bernice have a one night stand with a talented harpist named Tim she’d hired for the B&B re-opening but their encounter ended in a huge misunderstanding during which she was convinced he was dead.
When asked who she could see Bernice find happiness with, however, Samantha pointed out it could be difficult for her alter-ego to find a fitting partner due to a “shortage of men.”
“I suppose I could see Bernice go for a real bad boy, if there was a bad boy character in the village.”
“I think that’s the kind of guy that I could see her working with but it would only be a short-term thing because, obviously, he’d just do the dirty on her and it wouldn’t work.”
“It’s difficult to say, actually, because I think we’ve got a shortage of men.”
“It’s great for women because it’s a very female-strong cast, isn’t it? We haven’t got that many men, I don’t think.”
But with Cain Dingle being happily married to Moira Dingle, it could be hard for Bernice to find love… unless she had an unexpected love interest.
Luckily for Bernice, this will be the case.
In upcoming scenes of the Yorkshire-based drama, Bernice will try her luck with B&B co-owner Bob Hope, played by Tony Audenshaw.
It all begins when the pair try their best to give their failing business a boost with some fine wine tasting, although it takes Bob some convincing for Bernice to partake.
But instead of spitting the wine, Bernice decides to drink up and tries to kiss Bob in a drunken haze… only to be left with “egg on her face.”
“He’s very different to any man that she’s gone for before”, Samantha teased.
The pair open up to one another and, soon enough, their conversation turns to a hard topic for Bernice – finding the right person.
“Then she sort of goes towards him, thinking it would be a moment to kiss and then he sort of pulls away very abruptly, and she feels that she’s got egg on her face, really”, Samantha went on.
But is Bob really indifferent to Bernice’s charm? Tony Audenshaw, who plays the Woolpack employee, wouldn’t put it as bluntly.
Overcome with guilt due to his own relationship with Wendy Posner, Bob has already been accused of infidelity with Bernice until the nurse realised it was all a mix-up.
This time, Bob won’t be turning to Wendy with the truth and will, instead, seek advice from his friend Dan Spencer.
“He has a word with Dan, his old mate Dan, and they have a great man chat”, Tony said.
During this chat, Bob admits his attraction to Bernice which only leads Tony to conclude his on-screen alter ego is confused about his own feelings.
“I think he’s very confused, because he’s clearly got feelings towards her. He’s always sort of found her attractive. And he would never imagine, I wouldn’t think, that she would ever have tried to kiss him, you know. So he’s pretty confused.”
But how will Bob feel when he finds Wendy Posner will have an affair of her own with Liam Cavanagh?
Emmerdale airs weeknights from 7.30pm on ITV.
