Hannah, 48, who is best known for playing Rebecca Welton in the comedy series, introduced the programme last night.

The actress, who was joined by singers Alesha, 44, and Julia, 32, on stage for the first live show ahead of this weekend’s final.

The Benidorm star explained the voting rules for the semi-final to the watching crowd in French, before it was explained in English.

And she appeared to make a cheeky dig at last year’s announcer Amanda Holden after admitting to a major language barrier.

During her Eurovision cameo in 2021, Amanda, 52, greeted fans in French and Dutch before admitting she didn’t know which was which.

“Bon soir. Goedenavond. That is ‘good evening’ in French and Dutch although I’ve got absolutely no idea which is which,” she said.

Appearing to nod towards the awkward incident, Hannah joked about the incident after reading in French: “You see, Europe? Some of us Brits do bother to learn another language.”

Fans at home couldn’t help but notice the dig and took to Twitter.

One penned: “Hannah throwing shade at Amanda Holden already?! I love her so much,” while a second said: “Hannah throwing Amanda under le bus, quality shade.”

“Hannah throwing SHADE at Amanda Holden is iconic,” a third added.

While a fourth joked: “Hannah Waddingham flexes how she can speak French and makes a comment that I think is supposed to be interpreted as shade towards Amanda Holden.”

Last night, the first semi-final show of Eurovision 2023 was hosted at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool.

It saw 15 acts perform on stage to make it through to the next round.

The ten who made it through to the final were Croatia, Moldova, Switzerland, Finland, Czechia, Israel, Portugal, Sweden, Serbia and Norway.
