Bucks Fizz won the competition in 1981

Bucks Fizz, made up of Bobby G, Cheryl Baker, Mike Nolan and Jay Aston, placed first for the United Kingdom with their song Making Your Mind Up.

After their huge victory, the band went on to do some amazing things together, however in 1985 she decided that enough was enough.

Speaking to Sky Bingo, Jay said: “After a couple of years, you start to get tired and unfortunately there was two camps in the band, and it was the friction in the band that really started to show, and this is part of why I left – I was one of the first to leave.”

Reflecting on what they got up to as a band, Jay added: “It was a whirlwind two years, we were in and out of airports and hotels, TV shows, recording studios, photoshoots, magazine shoots, interviews, and even when we went into our rooms, at night we’d still be taking interviews over the phone.

“We went to South America, Australia, Philippines, Japan, and all over Europe several times.

“The only place we never conquered or had deals set up with was North America, which was a real shame, but we kind of did everything else.

“It was incredible, we travelled around the world in first class, a nice seat with Champagne, with nice cars and lovely hotels – it was a dream come true.”

Recalling the moment that they won Eurovision, Jay explained: “There was a lot of Champagne consumed, but after we won, we went into this massive room and there were hundreds of photographers and it was just flash, flash, flash – it was absolutely insane.

“It was that moment when we kind of realised that we won and that our lives had changed, and that little three-minute song, it changed everything, and it was a bit overwhelming.”

While Jay was in the group Bucks Fizz they had 12 singles enter the UK top 40, but they split in 1985

In 2004 Jay, Mike and Cheryl got together to form the spin-off The Fizz, Bobby did rejoin them in 2015, but left three years later.

Over the years they’ve released four albums, with three entering the charts.

Most recently they released Everything Under the Sun last year.
