Famous Film Sets Left Abandoned: A Closer Look at Creepy Movie Locations

Jurassic World

FILM fans can travel around the world to visit the real-life sets of their favourite movies. But not all former locations are maintained after shooting has wrapped – with many famous ones left derelict. From Jurassic World to The Hunger Games, here we take a look at the creepy abandoned sets from some of the biggest motion pictures.

The Hills Have Eyes

The 2014 cult horror flick, The Hills Have Eyes, was set in New Mexico, and the main characters stop at an eerie gas station to ask for directions. The now-abandoned gas station is actually located in Agadir, Morocco, and is even more creepy these days. Inside the store is still stocked with fake goods and filled with creepy puppets, surrounded by rusty cars.

Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr's 2008 Marvel classic, Iron Man, sees his character Tony Stark held captive in caves in Afghanistan, where he develops his first Iron Man suit. The location of the set was actually the shafts of the Cerro Gordo Mines in Inyo County, California. The former mining town was abandoned for years and sold in 2018 for £1.1m.

Looper

In the 2012 sci-fi movie Looper, Bruce Willis starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt. One scene showed Bruce's character in a showdown in a diner in the middle of an open field near Napoleonville, Louisiana, which has been left to rot.

The Fugitive

Fans can still see the train that almost killed Harrison Ford's character Dr. Richard Kimble in the 1993 movie The Fugitive. Both the train and the prison van from The Fugitive have been left to rust in the Great Smokey Mountains of North Carolina.

The Hunger Games

Scenes set in District 12 in the 2012 post-apocalyptic movie The Hunger Games actually took place in Henry Mill Village in Burke County, North Carolina. Previously a booming textile town, it has become ruins since filming took place, now too dangerous for fans to enter the homes that are still standing.
