Gwendoline Christie will play Lucifer in Sandman

Sandman follows Dream, the personification of dreams, as he travels the world fixing the mistakes he’s made throughout his eternal life.

Gwendoline – known for playing Brienne of Tarth in the HBO series – will be taking the role of Lucifer, one of three rulers of hell in the graphic novel.

Meanwhile Tywin Lannister’s Charles Dance will be playing warlock Roderick Burgess.

Roderick captures Dream (Tom Sturridge) in a magical trap for decades.

Upon his release, the Dream Lord seeks out his lost equipment and attempts to undo the damage his absence has caused.

The dark fantasy series also stars Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, head librarian in the land of Dreaming, alongside Sanjeev Bhaskar and Asim Chaudhry as the mischievous Cain and Abel.

Boyd Holbrook will play serial killing escaped nightmare, The Corinthian.

The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, American Gods) will serve as excutive producer and co-writer with Allan Heinberg and David S Goyer.

The show was originally meant to be a feature film, but Gaiman eventually agreed adapt it into a series produced by Warner Bros Television.

The series will likely follow the first book, which sees Dream travel through America and Hell to reclaim his lost magical items.

Speaking about the adaptation, Neil Gaiman said: “For the last thirty-three years, the Sandman characters have breathed and walked around and talked in my head.

“I’m unbelievably happy that now, finally, they get to step out of my head and into reality. I can’t wait until the people out there get to see what we’ve been seeing as Dream and the rest of them take flesh, and the flesh belongs to some of the finest actors out there.

“This is astonishing, and I’m so grateful to the actors and to all of The Sandman collaborators — Netflix, Warner Bros., DC, to Allan Heinberg and David Goyer, and the legions of crafters and geniuses on the show — for making the wildest of all my dreams into reality.”
