The 66-year-old was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer in 2014 and stepped back from broadcasting in October last year.

George returned to the BBC News At Six in April this year, eight years to the day he learnt he had cancer.

He said today: “A recent scan showed that my cancer has spread further so it’s back to some tough stuff.

“I’m missing my colleagues. Working in the newsroom has been such an important part of keeping energised and motivated.

“I look forward to being back in that studio as soon as I can.”

The newsreader underwent 17 rounds of chemotherapy after he was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2014.

He returned to the BBC the following year but the cancer returned in December 2017.

In June 2020 George said the cancer had spread to his lungs, liver and lymph nodes, but was not at a “chronic” or “terminal” stage.

He told the Sunday Telegraph in September how he has undergone more than 100 rounds of chemotherapy since his first cancer diagnosis.

He added that he has been lucky to get four hours of sleep a night.

George joined the BBC’s Six O’Clock News programme in 2003, co-presenting the bulletin with Sophie Raworth until 2005.

He then hosted it with Natasha Kaplinsky until 2007, when he became the show’s sole presenter.
