KATE Garraway has been branded an ‘inspiration’ by the parents of an Olympic Gold medalist on today’s Good Morning Britain.
The presenter was interviewing Simon and Amanda Richards, the parents of Team GB Olympic gold medalist Matt Richards, when they applauded her and husband Derek Draper’s “courage” in light of his Covid recovery.
As mum Amanda discussed her son’s “unbelievable” win, she quickly took time away from talking about Matt to share some kinds words with Kate.
Amanda said: “Can I just say to Kate as well, I just want to say that you and your husband are a massive inspiration as well.”
The comments clearly moved Kate, who responded: “Oh that’s so kind, thank you.”
To which, Amanda added: “No seriously you have been so brave and so courageous over the last 18 months, so I just wanted to send you my love.”
Taken aback by the heartfelt remarks, Kate added: “Thank you so much. I was just about to say to Ben after that, is this where we going wrong as parents because we’ve never given them so much!
“But you’re saying that has made me feel slightly better.
“And what you’re doing and what your son’s done and what the team’s doing is lifting everyone’s spirits.”
Amanda’s interview comes after her son Matt won a Gold medal alongside his teammates Tom Dean, James Guy and Duncan Scott in the 4x200m relay in Tokyo, Japan.
Kate’s husband Derek came down with Covid in March 2020 and was placed into a coma that he was in for around 13 weeks.
The 53-year-old is now recovering and being cared for at home with Kate and their children, Darcy, 15, and Billy, 12.
