Gogglebox fans gobsmacked as Jenny Newby’s husband Ray makes surprise cameo

Gogglebox viewers were agog when Jenny Newby’s husband made a surprise appearance on the show.

For years Jenny has been joined on the sofa with best friend Lee in his mobile home to comment on the week’s TV viewing.

Gogglebox’s Jenny Newby spoke to her husband Ray on last night’s show

But on Friday evening as Jenny was getting settled, she called up her husband Ray, to ask him: “Ray, can you do me a favour and pick up my prescription tomorrow?”

At first, it seemed Ray was unable to hear his wife’s request.

“Hold on a minute!” she told him.

But it seemed Ray wasn’t in the mood for chatting on national television.

“Oh, it’s gone off!” she told Lee as they giggled.

Jenny’s husband prefers to keep a low profile and stays out of the public eye so Jenny asked her bestie Lee to step in his place and audition for the Channel 4 hit show with her.

It was a winning formula as the friends from Hull, East Yorkshire, have become firm show favourites with fans.

However, Ray’s cameo sent fans on Twitter into a tailspin.

The pair met more than 20 years ago

“Lol I think that was your answer then Jenny #Gogglebox,” typed one show fan.

“Jenny needs some phone lessons,” wrote another followed by a laughing face.

Lee also has a long-term partner – Steve Mail – who has made a star turn on the show previously.

The couple have been together for 26 years although Steve lives in Cyprus and have spent six months apart in the lockdown only reuniting last August when Lee was allowed to fly over to the island.

They met at their local pub

Jenny and Lee met more than 20 years ago when Lee started frequenting Jenny’s local boozer, The Crown Inn.

He said of her invite to audition for the show: “I’d never seen Gogglebox, it had only just started, so I walked into filming swearing my head off because she’d got me out of bed on my day off.”

The pair even lived with each other during lockdown in order to film the new series together – they shared a photo of Jenny arriving at Lee’s caravan carrying two suitcases.

Jenny has stolen fans hearts this series by keeping a notebook on hit BBC show Line of Duty in which she logs the comings and goings of the show’s characters so she can keep up with the latest developments.

Channel 4 was blasted for refusing to clear its chosen schedule in the wake of Prince Philip’s death.

They auditioned to be on the show together after years of friendship

Unlike BBC and ITV who cancelled their schedules following news of the tragic event, with soaps including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders missing from the viewing schedule, Channel 4 kept to its plans.

But the show was the most watched programme on TV the day that Prince Philip died – averaging 4.2million viewers (25%) audience share.

And fans were pleased the series was shown as usual – “Thanks be to god they didn’t cancel my Gogglebox,” tweeted one viewer.
