Rev Richard Coles discussed his grief after the death of his partner David in 2019

The famous reverend opened up about his grief ahead of his new Channel 4’s documentary Good Grief?

Charlotte introduced Rev Richard and said: “It’s something that so many people go through and in so many different ways and a lot of times people find it hard to talk about.

“Is it possible to have a good grief or is it something you have to get through and is it always going to be horrible, painful and traumatic?”

He explained: “It’s always going to be horrible, painful and traumatic, but there are better ways of doing it I think.

GMB star takes a swipe at Luca Bish after shock Love Island result

“It is surprising that it happens to all of us if you are lucky to share your life with someone who you love and who loves you.

“But we’re not very well prepared for it, so one of the things I’ve been interested in doing is looking for what’s out there for people.”

But it wasn’t long before presenter I’m A Celeb star and presenter Richard turned the tables on him and opened up about his tragic loss.

The host recalled: “I remember when I was 21 when my father died very suddenly at 49 – I was on honeymoon at the time.

“He just came home and dropped dead suddenly and it was an uneblievable shock.

“I loved him very much and I felt his loss incredibly keenly and I remember looking back on it now.

“I was back to work after a couple of weeks but the grief was still there. The way it lifted was like in little incremental jolts.

“A summers morning a year after he died, getting up and going to the shops and realising I hadn’t thought about it for the first time in a two hour period and I realised it was getting better?

“Did you find that with the loss of your partner David?”

Rev Richard said that it was different for him and explained: “It’s not an orderly process, it’s different for everybody.

“Sometimes you get frustrated by people telling you what you should feel.

“What happens as time goes by everyday is another 24 hours with that person not materially in your life and you begin to get used to it but you don’t get better.”

But ITV viewers were left “uncomfortable” by host Richard’s awkward laughter and were frustrated that he made the interview about himself.

One wrote: “I’m finding Richard Madeley’s chuckling quite awkward during this piece on grief. #GMB”

Another posted: “Richard Madeley: Shut up I’m talking and it’s all about me. #GMB”

A third said: “Richard Madeley is incapable of holding a interview without switching it to himself. #GMB”

“Oh Richard here he goes again. #GMB,” another echoed.

David was just 42 when he died in December 2019.

In an extract from his book The Madness of Grief: A Memoir of Love and Loss, Richard, says: “It was really, really tough to see somebody you love destroy himself.

“It is like someone is drowning and you throw them a lifebelt but they are just not taking the lifebelt.

“And I did try everything I could think of to help him stop drinking, and in fairness to him he did try too, but it was too much for him.”

Richard explains: “I often think if someone dies of drink as people used to say, that people filed them under a sort of tragic, squalid death. David was so much more than that.

“I wanted to get a sense of why David was so important to those who loved him before we got to a discussion of what killed him.”

David was also in the clergy, and the pair met when Richard was preaching and they talked after his sermon.

But behind closed doors, David was in the grip of alcoholism.

Richard revealed he would often find his civil partner unconscious on the floor surrounded by empty bottles.

“It was really, really tough to see somebody you love destroy himself,” said Richard.
