Kate, also 55, was alerted of his recent change in condition during a live phone call backstage at the Good Morning Britain set.

On today’s show – where she was joined by a new presenter – Kate gave an update on Derek‘s battle.

It came during a chat with rail union boss Mick Lynch amid the rail strikes enveloping the UK’s train network.

She told him of the experiences she had found with rail staff and staff shortages, despite praising their high levels of service.
