From Unloved Farmhouse to Dream Home
Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud has transformed a neglected £1.1 million farmhouse in Herefordshire into his own vision of a dream home. The 65-year-old began the project shortly after purchasing the property in June 2021, following his separation from his wife and subsequent marriage to businesswoman Jenny Jones.
Inspired Design and Challenges Faced
McCloud's design inspiration for the 400-year-old property was partly drawn from a previous episode of Grand Designs. Planning documents aimed to restore the historic character and dignity of the Grade II listed building. Despite his years of guiding families through home renovations on TV, McCloud faced challenges, including spending a year installing an IKEA kitchen.
Respecting History and Personal Touches
The property, marketed through local estate agent Grant & Co, had a history of unauthorized changes that had compromised its character. McCloud's restoration efforts included replicating a contemporary oak staircase seen in a previous Grand Designs episode. He also shared his newfound appreciation for the emotional journey of creating a home, especially after living without a kitchen for a significant period.
Private Sanctuary and TV Crews
Despite his TV persona, McCloud has chosen to keep his home a private space and has no plans to feature it on Grand Designs. He likened the idea to "walking around with your trousers down," emphasizing the personal nature of his sanctuary away from the public eye.
