GRAND Designs: The Streets viewers all have the same complaint about a ‘nightmare’ row of new builds.
The Channel 4 show sees households embark on a mission to build their own homes as part of Britain’s biggest self-build project.
Kevin McCloud is on hand to oversee their efforts, but was left with mixed feelings about the diverse array of designs within the neighbouring streets.
As he cycled round, the cameras showed the various types of houses that had been built, including a “Swedish section” before joking: “Oh my word, I’ve cycled onto the set of Desperate Housewives.”
He admitted: “I did wonder whether this place would be like an architectural zoo, but a zoo is collected, and organised, this is like a new life form that is growing uncontrollably.
“It is a town without planning…I’m not sure I like it!”

He continued: “All my life I’ve campaigned for diversity, in buildings and in architecture, and now that it’s here, I don’t want it.”
Viewers at home were equally vocal about the results of the self-build, with one writing on Twitter: “What a strange estate! A mix of odd houses! Couldn’t live there. Would do my head in!”
Another added: “Awful house and that estate is a right mess #granddesigns.”
A third tweeted: “The Street house design’s mish mash is glorious nuts not sure, just gives me headache wtaching Kevin cycle through it never mind living in it ( think if you had Ocd it would be a nightmare to live in ) where is the paracetamol.”
Meanwhile a fourth shared: “Estates like this are everywhere on the edge of big cities in Lithuania, Poland etc, where everyone builds their own house. Looks odd in the UK though! #GrandDesigns.”
Others were more accepting of the results, with one writing: “We should be celebrating this!
“Not enough self build opportunities in the UK. More people should have the opportunity to design and build their own home, not just buy new houses that are designed and built to maximise profits for a select few national housebuilder shareholders.”
Another added: “I’d never get bored of living there seeing all the different designs! Every house is so vastly different to one another!”
