TV Chef Reveals Glaucoma Diagnosis During Routine Check-Up
Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers has shared that he has been dealt another major health blow while battling cancer. The 66-year-old TV chef was diagnosed with early-onset glaucoma during a regular visit to his opticians. This unexpected diagnosis comes just a few months after Myers revealed that he was undergoing treatment for an unspecified type of cancer.
Early Detection and Treatment
During a routine eye check-up, Dave Myers was informed that he showed signs of early-onset glaucoma. Multiple scans were conducted to assess the health of his eyes, leading to the detection of the condition. Fortunately, his optometrist caught it early, allowing him to be referred to his GP promptly. Myers was prescribed eye drops to prevent further progression of glaucoma.
In an interview with Express, Dave Myers expressed his relief at the early detection, stating, "I was so relieved and thankful that it had been detected because it meant I could continue my career, doing what I love most, being able to work alongside my best friend, but, more importantly, being able to see my children’s faces."
Advocacy for Accessible Eye Care
Recognizing that many individuals may not be as fortunate as him, Dave Myers has partnered with Specsavers, Labour MP Marsha De Cordova, and industry experts to advocate for easily accessible eye care for all. Together, they are working towards implementing a National Eye Health Strategy in England. Myers believes that this strategy would not only relieve pressure on the NHS but also ensure equal access to care for everyone.
Myers explained, "By making more efficient use of high street opticians, people would spend less time waiting for care. It would also ensure everyone has equal access to care, as there are some people, such as those experiencing homelessness, that are particularly disadvantaged and struggle to access an NHS eye test."
Positive Outlook Amid Cancer Treatment
Despite his health challenges, Dave Myers remains positive and continues to work alongside his Hairy Bikers partner, Si King. He recently shared with BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay that he is not letting the disease slow him down. Myers stated, "I’ve been back with my best mate on the bike filming and doing the books, and back to work. So it’s all pretty good, actually. I am really enjoying life at the moment."
Myers' eyes are currently healthy after using the prescribed eye drops. However, he confirmed that he is still undergoing cancer treatment but is doing well.
