Heartbreaking Loss: Wolf and Pups Drown in Farm Expansion After BBC Documentary

Planet Earth III has been hit with tragedy as an adorable wolf and her two pups were found drowned shortly after filming for the BBC documentary series. This groundbreaking series managed to capture the first-ever footage of these shy animals inside their den in Brazil's Cerrado grassland.

Shattered Dreams

During a three-year collaboration between BBC scientists and local conservationists, the Planet Earth teams tracked these endearing animals as they thrived in the grassland following the destruction of nearby farming areas. Unfortunately, the land where many of these wolves resided was left ruined after being burned down by local farmers in order to make room for their own crops.

Despite surviving this threat, it was later confirmed that mother wolf Nhorinha and her two pups, who were featured in the latest episode, had tragically drowned in a nearby drainage ditch. The BBC researchers were left devastated as they had witnessed the wolves living happily and seemingly under less threat than before, even though 50% of their population had been wiped out in the region of Pousada Trijuncao.

A Heartbreaking Loss

Kiri Cashell, a producer and director working on the show, expressed her sorrow over the tragic deaths: "The death of our maned wolf, Nhorinha, and her puppies is truly heartbreaking. We spent three years working with scientists to better understand this species, and the footage we were able to capture from inside the den provides such an intimate look into the first few weeks of these puppies' lives. Sadly, since filming ended, we have discovered that the mother and two of her puppies fell into drainage ditches which are used to feed the crops of neighboring farmland. Unable to escape, the wolves drowned."

Even more devastatingly, Cashell revealed that this incident is not an isolated one, as more and more wolves are suffering the same fate. She emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "More and more, farmland is encroaching onto the Cerrado. This is a vitally important grassland and some predict it could disappear completely in the next thirty years. The death of these maned wolves is an upsetting and poignant reminder of what could be lost."
