In a tweet on Monday he wrote: “Back for a minute. I’m bi. Congrats for forcing an 18 year old to out himself. I think some of you missed the point of the show. Bye.”

His comment comes after he was spotted holding hands with his A Cuban Girl’s Guide to Tea and Tomorrow co-star Maia Reficco – which led to speculation amongst his followers.

Kit was inundated with messages of support following his tweet, including a message from Heartstopper creator Alice Oseman, who wrote: “I truly don’t understand how people can watch Heartstopper and then gleefully spend their time speculating about sexualities and judging based on stereotypes.

“I hope all those people are embarrassed as F***. Kit you are amazing.”

Last year Kit admitted he felt “uncomfortable” about the constant speculation about him and his castmates’ sexuality.

Speaking on the Reign With Josh Smith podcast, he said:  “We’re still all so young,.

“To start sort of speculating about our sexualities and maybe pressuring us to come out when maybe we’re not ready. For me, I just feel perfectly confident and comfortable with my sexuality.

“But I don’t feel the need to really, you know – I’m not too big on labels and things like that. I’m not massive about that.”

He added: “I don’t feel like I need to label myself, especially not publicly. It feels a bit strange to make assumptions about a person’s sexuality just based on hearing their voice or seeing their appearance. I feel like that’s a very interesting, slightly problematic sort of assumption to make.”

Heartstopper follows the story of Charlie (Joe Lock), a 14-year-old who develops a crush on a popular rugby player called Nick (Kit Connor), and is adapted by writer Alice Oseman from her graphic novel of the same title.

The series is already in Netflix’ most watch titles, and has been hailed a ‘game-changer’ and the platform’s ‘best series ever’, gaining a 100 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.
