I kept my Grandad’s old whiskey bottles in the loft – now they’re worth a fortune for a very lucky reason

AN ANTIQUES Roadshow guest was shocked after learning the value of three whisky bottles she’d had “up in the loft in a box” for 50 years.

During the recent episode of the BBC show, host Fiona Bruce and the team travelled to Clissold Park in Hackney where guests brought their old items to be valued by the experts.

The expert said the bottles dated back to the “1930s, maybe ’40s” but then the “rarer white label is much more sort of 1907, 2908”

One guest, in particular was left stunned when she found out the real value of three bottles of whisky that had been passed down from her grandfather.

The bottles made an impression on expert, John Foster as he told the guest it was “quite unusual” to see the three bottles together, not being part of a collection.

The guest told John the bottles had been passed down from her grandfather in the 1950s after a local landlord was giving them away after deciding to close his pub, and she’s been keeping them in her attic for 50 years.

As John inspected the bottles, he pointed out that keeping them in the attic wasn’t good for their condition.

Although he wasn’t too impressed with the original state of the bottles, after taking a closer look, he realised the bottles dated back to the “1930s, maybe ’40s” but then the “rarer white label is much more sort of 1907, 2908”.

He went on to tell the guest about the historical context of the whisky during these time periods. He added: “Everyone was into wines and fine wines and whisky had got sort of steadily more sought after.”

This gave a hint that the guest’s possessions could have a higher value than John originally thought.

John then revealed a valuation of £1,000, and then explained it was just for one of the bottle’s.

The guest was stunned, but she soon became very excited when she learned just how much the other bottles were worth.

John revealed the other two bottles would be worth “about £7,000 per bottle”. The guest was ecstatic at the value of her items which came to a total of £15,000.

The guest was left speechless, covering her mouth in shock at the “unbelievable” valuation. As she said how “proud” her grandfather would have been to hear of the value.

Antiques Roadshow continues Sunday on BBC One.
