I quit EastEnders for a pub: Former star turns to a new career

From the small screen to the local pub

A former star of the hit TV show EastEnders has left acting behind and is now running a pub with their partner. Meryl Fernandes, who played the character Afia Masood from 2009 to 2012, made the decision to switch careers and focus on being a pub owner.

From fame to family life

Meryl gained recognition for her role as Afia in EastEnders, but these days she is a mother and spends her time managing The Duke of Richmond pub in Hackney. Alongside her partner Tom Oldroyd, they have turned the pub into a "neighbourhood pub and dining room".

A love story on screen

During her time on EastEnders, Meryl's character Afia was introduced as a love interest for Tamwar Masood, played by Himesh Patel. Their relationship faced numerous challenges, including a volatile and abusive connection between Afia's father and Tamwar's mother.

A heartbreaking exit

After a tumultuous journey, Afia decided to leave Albert Square and her husband behind. This decision left Tamwar devastated, with Patel expressing his sadness over their characters' separation, stating that they were "made for each other" and had a "unique" connection.

Aside from running a pub, Meryl is also a presenter on the popular CBBC series The Dengineers. This new chapter in her career has opened up opportunities outside of acting, and she is embracing the chance to connect with a younger audience.

So, while Meryl may have said goodbye to her acting days, she has found success and fulfillment in her new role as a pub owner and TV presenter.
