IT was an iconic kids show that defined a generation but the family run Sooty Show did not come without its secrets.
Show star, Matthew Corbett, son of the character’s creator Harry, has admitted the seriously embarrassing part of working on the popular children’s show.
Matthew Corbett has lifted the lid on The Sooty Show
He confessed his ’embarrassment’ on what he is remembered for
Matthew spoke to The Guardian about his work on The Sooty Show and how he came to carry on his father’s legacy when he ultimately stepped back.
In 1975, Harry suffered a heart attack and as such was unable to continue his duties on the show.
Under Matthew’s lead, he was able to transform the show into a more light-hearted sitcom vibe and add in extra dialogue and stories which admittedly were a light take on his very own home life.
Speaking to the publication of the show and the ’embarresment’ that came with it, he said: “It’s a bit embarrassing to be recognised for having your hand up a teddy bear’s nethers.
“My own family would never have spoken to me if I’d taken it as seriously as my parents had.”
His mother also worked on the show as the voice of Soo and his parents had been incredibly proud of their creation.
Matthew said: “If people didn’t recognise my father in a restaurant, my mum would sidle up and say: “This is Harryboy, creator of Sooty!”
He also confessed his career took a turn in order to keep The Sooty Show up and running.
The star added: “I gave up a potentially good career in the children’s show Rainbow to take over.
“I couldn’t risk my father deciding to make a comeback in two years if he recovered, so I insisted we draw up a plan.
“And it didn’t work with my mother as the voice of Soo because you can’t order your own mother about, and it was hard for my father to see her going off each day to film a show he couldn’t be part of.
“The great thing about being a writer is that you can make up ridiculous situations with mud or jam or goo and other people have to enact them.
“I was always aware that there was a second, older audience watching so I would push the boundaries.”
Matthew eventually left the role at its peak in order to get the best possible outcome but did keep a few mementos.
He said: “I retired while I was still at the top so I could get the best price for the company, and I’ve never looked back, although I did keep a set of puppets and have the right to use them on cruise ships and at dinner speeches.
“They’ll come in handy if I lose everything.”
