Eerie pictures have emerged showing the old EastEnders set before it was bulldozed to make way for redevelopment. The iconic set, which had been home to the long-running soap for 37 years, was located at the BBC Elstree Studios in Borehamwood. The images capture the former site of Albert Square in all its glory, with the iconic Queen Victoria pub, Kathy Beale's cafe, and the famous Minute Mart newsagents all abandoned and frozen in time.
Farewell to a TV icon
In January 2022, EastEnders producers began filming at a new location nearby, as the original set fell into disrepair. The decision to relocate came as the old set, built in 1984, was deemed no longer fit for purpose. Beeb bosses invested £87 million in a new abode, which allows the show to be shot in high definition. As a result, the old set was demolished to make way for a housing scheme.
A glimpse into the past
The eerie pictures of the abandoned set offer a nostalgic glimpse into the world of EastEnders. The iconic Queen Victoria pub, once managed by cockney matriarch Peggy Mitchell, stands deserted. Kathy Beale's cafe is empty, but still fully stocked with drinks and pastries. The famous Minute Mart newsagents sits with its striking green facade untouched. Even the Slater household seems frozen in time, with Stacey's son Arthur's toys left on the sofa and floor. It's a scene that fans of the show will remember well.
Memories in the rubble
For many EastEnders fans, the abandoned sets hold a wealth of memories and significance. The old studio's demolition marks the end of an era for the beloved soap. However, the relocation to a new, modern set ensures that audiences can continue to enjoy their favorite characters and storylines in stunning high definition. EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer, keeping audiences entertained and invested in the trials and tribulations of Albert Square's residents.
