Inside Martin Lewis’s horrific family tragedy that left him ‘unable to leave the house for six years’

MARTIN Lewis became overwhelmed with emotion today as he was reminded of his horrific family tragedy as he reported on the Queen’s death.

The presenter became overwhelmed with his own grief live on air

He choked up after seeing images of Prince William and Prince Harry walking behind their mum Diana’s coffin at her funeral.

Martin was three days away from turning 12 – the same age Prince Harry lost his own mother – when Susan Lewis died in a traffic road traffic accident in 1984.

He was unable to leave the house for six years because of “severe anxiety” that something bad would happen.

The dad-of-one also admits crying every day until he was 15 years old as he struggled with his grief.

Speaking on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Martin told how his “childhood ended” the day his mother was killed by a lorry while out horse riding with his sister.

He has been left “deeply scarred” by what happened, admitting: “It was a defining moment of my life that changed the way I act and behaved, and it was devastating.”

Now, 32 years on, Martin says he still struggles with his grief – and today was triggered by the images shown ahead of the Princes walking behind the Queen’s funeral.

The 50-year-old has previously explained he was picked up from Jewish Sunday School by someone different who took him home where he was told about the accident.

Martin admitted: “My mum and my sister had been horse riding and there had been an accident involving a lorry, and nobody told me how serious it was.

“I always remember worrying because my mum was in hospital and I was worrying that she wouldn’t be there for my birthday in three days time.

“And my grandmother, my Dad’s mother, said to me, ‘It’s alright, she’ll be here for your Bar Mitzvah.’ I’m a Jewish boy, that happens when you’re 13, and I thought nothing of it.

“The next day my dad told me that she had died that morning and that was the end of my childhood, that moment.

“I cried every day until I was 15 and then I stopped crying and became brittle.’

‘”I am still now 35-odd years later deeply scarred by what happened to me.”

Martin didn’t go to the funeral to say goodbye to his mother.

He was unable to cope with Mother’s Day until he became a dad and was able to celebrate his wife Lara Lewington.

The couple have been married since 2009.

He added: “Even when I married my wife, when it was Mother’s Day, she would go with her mother for Mother’s Day and I could not go with.

“I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t cope with Mother’s Day.

“Only now, thank God, with the great joy of having my daughter, only now is my wife has become Mummy, has Mother’s Day become something that I can actually cope with going through.”

Martin sparked concern with fans today when he went missing while presenting Good Morning Britain today – forcing Susanna Reid to briefly go solo after having an emotional breakdown.

The Money Saving Expert was briefly AWOL after the ITV programme returned from an ad break.

Good Morning Britain will air first-ever Sunday show with change of presenters

He said on GMB today: “I wasn’t going to say this on air but it resonates with me very powerfully for someone who lost his mother at the same age as Harry in a road traffic accident.

“I find it very difficult to watch. Thank goodness I wasn’t made to walk behind. I didn’t even go. It does bring back some…”

He broke off before telling his co-host Susanna Reid to “carry on” as he tried to compose himself.

Sympathetic Susanna replied: “Oh Martin. When events like this happen they are very triggering of private grief. We totally understand.”

One GMB fan said: “My heart went out to @MartinSLewis there.

“When memories hit you like that. There’s little you can do to stop the emotion that follows.”

Another said: “Well done there @MartinSLewis – a tough couple of minutes for you.”
