Is Richard Madeley replacing Piers Morgan on GMB?
Since the beginning of June 2021, Richard has been co-hosting GMB with Susanna Reid.
Although nothing has been confirmed, he is the current bookies’ favourite to take over the role permanently.
He told The Celeb Report earlier in June 2021: “Good Morning Britain, it’s a good show to do. It suits me and, yeah, I think I suit it.”
We revealed in April 2021 how Richard had become the front-runner for the plum role, with bosses looking to extend the deal if he proved a hit.
He said: “Whether I’m going to be asked to take over, I have no idea. I have had no approach at any level formally or informally.
“The phone hasn’t rung, I haven’t had a ping into my inbox.
“The bookies have me down as the front-runner and there have been opinion polls where I’ve come out reasonably well, but there’s a huge difference between that and it being a reality.
“I’ll go in, I’ll fill in, I’ll enjoy it and I hope they ask me back. But in terms of sitting in for Piers, it’s a completely open question.”
When did Richard Madeley first host GMB?
Richard has been a stand-in presenter on the ITV show breakfast show since 2017.
He previously filled in for Piers when he was off on annual leave and during the holidays.
Richard is of course is a stalwart for hosting morning telly and is well known for being a presenting duo with his wife Judy Finnigan.
Together they hosted This Morning from 1988 until 2001.
After this, they fronted chat show Richard & Judy on Channel 4 until 2009.
Who else is in the running to replace Piers?
- Victoria Derbyshire – The Celeb Report exclusively revealed how ITV wants to poach BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire for Good Morning Britain to replace Piers. Bosses are keen for the Beeb journalist to join GMB’s line-up. Victoria’s Bafta-winning current affairs show on the BBC was axed in March 2021, though she continues to present the news.
- Judge Rinder – Lawyer and TV host Rob Rinder is best known for his daytime reality courtroom show Judge Rinder. The TV star has previously stepped in for Piers
- Eamonn Holmes – Like Richard, Eamonn Holmes is also a veteran of morning TV. He shot to fame on ITV’s previous breakfast show GMTV in the 90s and early 00s, before switching to Sky News. Also like Richard, Eamonn is of course well known for hosting This Morning with his wife Ruth Langsford.
