What's Happening?
ITV is making big changes to its soap schedule, with Coronation Street and Emmerdale facing a cash crisis. Currently, Corrie airs three hour-long episodes a week, while Emmerdale has four 30-minute episodes and one hour-long. Now, both shows will only have five 30-minute episodes each week.
Why the Change?
A source revealed that the production costs have been squeezed, leading to the need for changes. The goal is to ensure the longevity of the soaps for the future while keeping them integral to ITV. The new format will include a "soap power hour" with two back-to-back 30-minute episodes.
Streamlining for the Future
ITV aims to make both Emmerdale and Coronation Street more "streaming-friendly" with the new schedule. This move comes after several big name stars left Coronation Street due to the budget crisis, causing financial strain for the show.
What to Expect
The revamped schedule will kick off with a major stunt on both soaps. Despite the changes, ITV will still broadcast more hours of soap each week compared to other channels. Currently, Emmerdale airs six episodes per week, while Coronation Street has six episodes spread throughout Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Schedule adjustments may occur for special events or seasonal shifts.
