I’ve turned down brilliant jobs because my faith stops me working on a Sunday, says Strictly’s Dan Walker

DEVOUT Christian Dan goes to church every week and refuses to work on a Sunday.

As a result, he said he has had to “turn down amazing jobs”.

BBC’s Dan Walker said he has turned down some amazing job opportunities

This week, he announced he would not be participating in the five-week Strictly tour.

And Dan — who doesn’t swear — strongly believes children need to be safeguarded against the proliferation of bad language on TV and online.

Chatting from his home in Sheffield — where he went to university — the BBC presenter said: “I’ve been a Christian for a long time and my faith has always been really important to me.

“It’s at the centre of who I am, what I think, what I do.

“I know people talk a lot about me not working on a Sunday but this industry can be all-encompassing if you let it. I’ve turned down loads of amazing jobs because of it.

“I don’t want to let work take over. My sister is a nurse, she works on a Sunday and that’s great, but I’ve taken that decision to have Sunday as the day I go to church and a day I get to spend with my family.

“I want my kids to know that, wherever I am, I will be there for them.

“I don’t want to get into a huge moral debate but I do think we’ve opened the doors up to children about all sorts of unhealthy things.

“We need to be really careful about the stuff we show on TV and the things they see on the internet.

“We’re chipping away at childhoods.

“I don’t swear. I don’t swear in private and I certainly don’t swear on telly.

“I do think television needs to maintain some standards.”
