Kate Garraway reveals Derek Draper’s parents’ ‘sacrifice’ as they couldn’t see him at Christmas while Downing St partied

KATE Garraway was overcome with emotion this morning as the revealed her husband Derek’s parents didn’t get to visit him hospital because they were following the rules – while Downing Street partied.

The GMB presenter, 54, recalled their “sacrifice” in not seeing their son who was in hospital with Covid at the time, describing how it “broke their hearts.”

Derek fell ill with coronavirus early last year and spent more than a year in hospital which led to him being placed into a medically-induced coma as he suffered long-term damage to his organs.

He is thought to be one of the worst affected living Covid patients in the UK.

Speaking about the shocking double standards from the government who were urging the public to stay home while they socialised, Kate explained: “The restrictions on visiting him were reduced.

“The children couldn’t see him and hadn’t been able to for a long time and we were hoping things might loosen you know with Christmas spirit. But it couldn’t be.

“Derrick’s parents, most movingly I think, I kept on saying to them ‘I’m sure there’s a way to make it work for you to see him it’s been 10 months’ and they were resolute. It was breaking their hearts.”

She continued: “They just said they don’t want to break the rules. ‘We’re not allowed to travel, we don’t want to break the rules.

“We don’t want to put anyone else at risk and we don’t want to do that.’ And I thought ‘ Gosh you are absolutely right.; and that’s an absolute sacrifice you are willing to make’.”

Last night Boris insisted he knew nothing of last year’s bash at No 10 and launched an internal inquiry into whether aides and civil servants had broken the law with their cheese and wine bash.

It came as he told Brits to work from home again if they can and wear masks at most indoor public venues, while ordering vaccine passports and contact testing for Omicron.
